Birdwatching in Sundarban- The Unconventional Way

Birdwatching is normally associated with a lot of patience, staying on machans and tree tops or the more occasional waiting near water bodies.
Sundarbans is a place where birdwatching acquires an altogether different dimension. In a landscape dominated by great tidal creeks and water ways, the only way left for birding is through motorized boats which come in various shapes and sizes. |

The vast mangrove forests, the crocodiles, sharks and man eating tigers of sundarban ensure that birdwatching is done in the most unconventional manner. All the above mentioned obstacles mean that there is very little conventional birdwatching and more observational from the water.
Some of the rare species which are rarely sighted are the brown-winged kingfisher, grey headed lapwing, fish eagle and the mangrove whistler. The other bird species include the purple sunbird, northern eagle owl, small minivet, black-hooded oriole etc. |
